CANADIAN MYTH

We as Canadians, have been led to believe that we are the luckiest people in the world. In a sense this is true. The Prime Minister has made this statement many times. Our Prime Minister has pointed out to us that the United Nations has said that we are the number one nation in the world. Why has he had to make these statements? The answer to this is quite simple, he has been accused of not running the government the way it should be. It is his means of halting the legitimate complaints voiced by so many Canadian Citizens who are not happy with the way things are.

To begin with, let us draw an analogy. If you have a box of apples that are in different stages of going rotten, and you say that the best apple is the one that is the least rotten, that is a statement of fact. The same statement of fact can be said about our status as the number one country in the world. To what degree of rotten, or whether the word rotten is the proper description is at best a moot point and is used only to make a point.

To state that we have the best Country in the world to live in is probably true. What this statement leaves out is, "what could this country be". That is a good question to ask ourselves and I am sure there are hundreds of answers. Lets try a few. First can we establish a stable hierarchy? If you recall prior to an election, we the people come first then the persons we elect to office and then the administration that is supposed to serve us. The trouble is after the election the hierarchy changes to first, the people we elect, then the bureaucracies, or vice versa, and then, we the people come in last. If we could change this we would truly have a government by the people and for the people. That is if we make a few more important changes!!! Do you ever watch "THE HOUSE OF COMEDY" I’ve changed the name from the House of Commons on TV. This is the start of where yours and my taxes go down the drain. The government of Canada is the largest corporation in the country and yet on TV you can see what appears to be grown men and women reverting in age and playing with toys. If General Motors or any of the other large corporations conducted their business in this manner they would be long gone. There are ways out if the people of Canada have the will and determination to make changes. Lets not kid ourselves, the politicians and the bureaucrats like it the way it is and they will fight us all the way.

Important changes: History tells us that if we stay with the status quo, we don’t have that much time left. Examples, had we stayed in the Cave Man mode where would we be today? There were institutions that were a nescessary part of our evolution and although they were not the best of alternatives we managed to start our climb up the ladder of civilization. Small groups joined with other groups to make larger groups, these in turn spawned leadership factions such as Dictatorships and Monarchies. Most of these have been replaced with different types of governments such as Democracy, Communism and combinations of these. Monarchies did serve a need during those times of illiteracy and growing awareness of the world around us. Few remain and of these most are impotent and are there only as reminders of the past. Some Dictators are still in power but the number lessens as people become more educated and search for a better way of life.

The most important development was that of the Democratic system of Government by and for the people. Today this upholds the basic rights and freedoms of the majority of the masses and protects the constitutionality of the country. We do, as may be expected, have problems that develope as the size of government becomes top heavy. In the beginning we had, and still have, a multi-party system that assured stability in the decision making and law making and protected our way of government.

As mentioned earlier our governments are now the biggest corporations in the country and the people that we elected to look after our affairs are finding difficulty in running our corporation like a corporation should be run. We now have the means to protect our way of government without the multi-party system. The bickering and arguing, the waste of time and tax payers money is now unacceptable, the insistence that party members who are elected by us must be partisan regardless of personal preferences, takes away the whole idea of why we elected them in the first place. This is getting to be a dangerous political practice controlled by the few and the powerful. A good example of this problem has just concluded in the United States. A few powerful right wing politicians, and possibly others not in government, used partisan means to try to usurp the President. His personal sexual antics, as deplorable as they may be, were not enough for impeachment, they hung it all out for the all of the world to see, dirty linen that only desecrated the office of the President and could have been dealt with after his term of office. One way of controlling this practice would be to have instant recall as well as a system that gives all of the people elected the right to represent the electors wishes. If they do not properly represent the voters call them back and re-install someone who will. Get away from all the hoopla and expense of national elections and maintain continuity by electing persons to represent our districts and leaving them there as long as they can do the job we put them in for. The people that you elect, or better still, the people that you hire must have the ability to convey the wishes of your district and have a voice in putting your needs on the table. In turn these needs must be researched and their viability determined and then brought back where real democracy will take place, where everyone will have a say in how our country will conduct it’s business. Try these couple of dandies on for size. Did anyone of our electorate have a say in the imposition of the much hated GST, or what the money could be used for? No! of course not, we know that one of the excuses for imposing this tax was to try and reduce the National debt but history tells us that the government ran around like chickens with their heads cut off trying to find ways to spend this new found gold mine. Had we a representative, who with others, researched a GST tax and came back to us and asked for our support, they would have had mine as long as the amount was right and the tax was to be spent on the reasoning behind the necessity for this type of tax. Then there was the change to the metric system. The metric system is a better than the imperial system but one must ask, was the billions and billions of dollars cost worth the change over? Had I been asked I believe I would have said no way. I am a firm believer that were our country run like a true Democracy, of the people, by the people and for the people, where we had the say through our representative, there would be savings of billions of dollars and our tax load would be half of what it is today. The time for freeloading and pork barreling and impotence of our present system is long past due for a very serious revamping. Our Federal system is the largest corporation in Canada and should be run like a corporation.
