MONTY THE MOTTLED PETREL

Unusual Sighting

Petrel at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Shelter

Wildlife Rescue in Burnaby received a bird from Gunther and Nancy Golinia of the Prince Rupert Wildlife Shelter, which has the birding community very excited. It is a Mottled Petrel. The bird washed ashore oiled on Banks Island south of Prince Rupert. It is the first one of its kind found on the shore of British Columbia. In fact, only 5 sightings of Mottled Petrels have been made here. Most of them about 200 miles or more off shore. The bird was shipped south after being stabilized but unfortunately, while in Burnaby the Petrel succumbed to the combined effects of stress and oiling. The bird has been mounted for the Provincial Museum in Victoria.
