Disaster at the Shelter

These are the eagles waiting for rescue. During the rescue a wooden beam broke and one of the rescuers was badly bruised. The eagle being carried out was not injured. The weight of the snow and ice was so heavy that two large steel beams were twisted,

Damage to pens puts shelter in bind

LEANNE RITCHIE Canadian Press PRINCE RUPERT

-- The Prince Rupert wildlife rehab shelter needs help after some of its pens collapsed from last week's snow, killing several birds. The unusual storm dropped 45 centimetres of snow on top of the shelter's rehabilitation pens. Then the snow froze. The weight of the ice twisted steel beams and bent down the wire mesh of several shelter pens, collapsing others. Repairs will cost about $25,000 and put an added strain on Gunther and Nancy Golinia, the retired couple who for the past 17 years have dedicated their time and money to saving injured animals. Victorious battle 'affirmed our national identity'  "We are really in a bind as far as covering the cost to rebuild these pens," said the shelter's Tobbi Gjelsvik. "This affects the shelter's ability to take in animals." The Golinias are best known for their work with eagles but they take in all kinds of wildlife such as injured owls, deer and mink. They even helped rehabilitate such exotic animals as a frigate bird, native to Mexico, that got lost in a storm and crash-landed onto a B.C. ferry two years ago. The shelter takes in 700 animals a year and its success rate in releasing animals back in to the wild is 80 per cent. Mr. Golinia, who is in his 70s, is known to go out to pick up an injured animal at any time in the day or night, while Ms. Golinia stays at the shelter to monitor the animals' intake of medicine and food. They take in animals from the Queen Charlotte Islands east to Smithers and from the B.C. border to the central coast. Their property, located on the eastern edge of Prince Rupert, is a collection of eagle pens, heated aviaries and covered barns. Deer often graze in the grassy area between the pens, and the air is filled with the high-pitched cries of eagles stretching their wings. Since the storm, the couple have been so busy trying to repair the damage to the shelter that they haven't had time to notify the community about their need for assistance.

The Beginning of the Recovery

It was terrible weather for us all, but a good day nevertheless. Got lots done.   Ist photo- Workparty after the day was over...shovelled gravel and wood chips and basic cleanup of the site. Most were employees from City West, but there were others also...   2nd Photo-Left to right-Nancy Golinia,  Nikki Morse & Leeanda Wahl from City West & Gunther Golinia .The girls from City West were presenting a $1,000.00 cheque from City West and also $188.00 in cash which came from the employees at City West...Money to go towards rebuilding the pens.   We have received a committment from BC Hydro for $3,000.00 over the next three years to help the shelter. Their first cheque for $1,000.00 just arrived....We thank them....

The Prince Rupert Wildlife Rehab Shelter wishes to announce that our fundraising for the replacement of our destroyed pens was overwhelming to say the least. We reached our goal plus and couldn't have done it without the compassion and caring of our community and outlying areas. The response was fantastic. The different ways people donated were amazing. From the boy and girl that donated their birthday money, to the fellow that brought out supplies… it went on and on. People gave what they could, and it was all equally appreciated by the Shelter. The Shelter wholeheartedly thanks the following for their contributions.
