About Sunchaser and the Khutzeymateen

About Sunchaser and the Khutzeymateen 4 day trip

------------------------------------------------------------------

The Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary is Canada’s first grizzly bear sanctuary. The 4 day, 3 night trip offered by Sunchaser Charters has been classified as the number 1 world class wildlife destination in Canada by the B.C Government and Beautiful B.C. Magazine and CTV.

Whether you are flown into the sanctuary by floatplane or sail in on the beautiful yacht Sunchaser, it is a trip of a lifetime. The Sunchaser is a beautiful fully equipped yacht complete with freezer and hot water shower. The meals are all expertly prepared to suit our client’s dietary needs.

Your captain Dan Wakeman is a fully licensed sea captain by the Canadian Government and the yacht meets or exceeds all safety Government standards.

Dan Wakeman was instrumental in the creation of the Sanctuary over the last 20 years and is officially permitted by the B.C. Government to take clients into the Sanctuary. Dan has also written a book on the Khutzeymateen titled “Fortress of the Grizzlies”. We conduct more trips into the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary than any other tour operator on the coast.

The Sunchaser will be your home for the 3 nights you are in the Sanctuary, there are no shore installations. Everything is pristine and you will find no empty pop tins or cigarette butts in this area. Upon arriving you will be given an orientation on boat safety and the habits of the grizzlies.

The Khutzeymateen is a jewel on the planet and has been called the Garden of the Grizzlies. It is too beautiful for words to describe. It has lush green meadows with mountains carpeted with evergreens rising straight out of the water to over a mile high. Waterfalls are everywhere as are the grizzlies.

Most of our viewing is done from the deck of the yacht or from our large inflatable boat. We go ashore on occasion to view bear trails, old growth trees and in season wildflowers.

From early May until mid July we see the grizzlies courting and mating, playing and eating sedge grass, plus mothers with cubs and the occasional wolf and also all the in season birds, ducks and wild flowers.

From late August until mid September the salmon come into the rivers in the tens of thousands and it is a time of feasting for the bears. You will see them eating salmon.

Most all of our clients from all over the world say that our trip is the best trip they have ever been on and sometimes even weep when they leave The Valley of the grizzlies.
