The Glory Days road race was initiated in 1986 by Chuck McTavish and Frank DeBlass and named after Chuck's favourite Bruce Springsteen song. For the first two years there was only a 10km event, starting at Fairview Terminal and doing a loop of section 2 before heading down along the waterfront, up the old CN ramp, out to BC Packers, and finishing at the old Booth School. A 5km was started in 1988 from Westview school, using mobile phones to synchronize the starts. The 5km course was the second half of the 10km course.
In 1993 Chuck left town, and Rupert Runners took over the event. The course was changed so that both races now started at the Crest Hotel, the Crest being our major sponsor. The courses were also accurately measured. It is an impressive sight to see some 200 runners heading up 2nd Avenue. The runners separate just before the 2nd Avenue bridge, with the 10km crossing the bridge to do the section 2 loop, while the 5km turns onto Park Avenue and turns around at the Campground before heading down to the waterfront. After the section 2 loop, the 10km also goes onto Park Avenue and runs out past the Campground, turning just before the ferry terminals and then coming back along Park Avenue before also heading down to the waterfront. All runners and walkers have to negotiate the fairly steep hill on Bill Murray Drive before finishing just past the Crest, by the Northwest Community College. There is a buffet lunch provided for all participants at the Crest before the noon awards ceremony.
The record turnout was 232 in 1995.
