Iris Barker
Painter

Iris was born in the east Kootenays where she first developed a love of painting, especially after watching an artist paint their family home and garden.
Art was her favourite subject in high school, and during this time she received an invitation, by a former art teacher, to attend the new Kootenay School of the Arts in Nelson, but was too young to be able to attend. This, however, inspired her to carry on and strive to develop. In the mid 60's, Iris moved to Vancouver to work in an art supply store. Being on the fringe of the art scene she was able to observe and learn more about this craft.
The following decade she lived in numerous locations in eastern Canada. Her final move was from Quebec to Prince Rupert, where she worked as a letter carrier until retirement in 1998.
Since her retirement, Iris has been thoroughly enjoying painting in acrylics, acrylic watercolour and sketching in pencil, ink and conte' crayon. She has done commissioned paintings of boats, scenery and portraits using her own photos for reference. Most of all, Iris enjoys painting what most inspires her and at her own pace to preserve the integrity of her work.
Iris has a studio in Dodge Cove and in Prince Rupert. Her prices vary according to the size, medium and surface.
